nomad.
“A nomad I will remain for life, in love with distant and uncharted places.”
— Isabelle Eberhardt
“People don’t take trips, trips take people.” — John Steinbeck
“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” —David Mitchell
Name: BeNU
Notes: If you live in Harlem, you’ve likely seen BeNU coming from or going to a gig wrapped in a thick gray sweater with a satchel slung around his shoulder. He’s a Morehouse graduate, a yogi, and laid-back hippie of sorts. I met him before he left for Paris sometime in the 2000s. When he moved back to New York, our paths crossed a few more times before we started hanging regularly. We have a lot of friends in common. BeNU was a regular at get-togethers at my home before the pandemic shut it down.
BeNU is the kind of guy you call when you need help with, well, basically anything. Got something to move and need a hand? Call BeNU. Need help hanging an art show? I know somebody. There is a lot of space in our conversations. Some might poo-poo concepts and ideas like past lives, ayahuasca, multi-dimensions, hauntology, digital life, nomadism, etc., but BeNU is open-minded and so we chat. I’m grateful for his friendship because I need a lot of imaginative space to feel sane. Everyone needs a BeNU.
