July 29, 2010. I met Azure at the Schomburg Center at a Town Hall meeting about the future of the Center, “What’s Up @ The Schomburg Center.” Director Dr. Howard Dodson was retiring, and the community was worried the Center would be closed. At the time I was an archivist there and my colleague Edwina and I were passing notes to each other tripping on the carnival of nonsense before us.
Azure leaned over and said, “I’d like to know what’s on those notes,” smiling mischievously. I don’t remember how I responded but liked her energy and beauty.
Fast forward to 2019 (I think) and Azure and I began spending time in Harlem walking the mornings, having coffee at Lenox Café, getting to know one another. Been wanting to photograph her for years. You can see why.
